Why I Do What I Do
No matter what we do in life, it’s always helpful to have someone there with us.
There’s an old story that illustrates my passion in life. It goes like this:
A man is walking down the street when he falls in a hole. The walls are so steep he can’t get out. The man starts to panic.
A doctor walks by and the man yells up, “Hey doc! I fell in this hole and I can’t get out. Can you lend me a hand?” The doctor throws down a prescription and tells the man to make an appointment with his office if that doesn’t help.
Next, a professor walks by and the man yells out, “Hey professor! I fell in this hole and I can’t get out. Can you lend me a hand?” The professor throws him a philosophy book and tells him to swing by his office where they can discuss what life has taught us about avoiding holes in the future.
Now the man’s really getting desperate. But just then a friend walks by. The man yells, “Hey buddy! I fell in this hole and I can’t get out. Can you lend me a hand?” Without a moment’s hesitation his friend jumps down into the hole with him. “That was stupid,” the man says. “Now we’re both down here.”
The friend smiles. “Yes,” he says. “But I’ve been down here before and I know the way out.”
